History Airbus H160

The Airbus H160 helicopter was for the first time presented to public in 2011, then it still carried the name X4. In spite of the fact that it bore an index experimental, this model was already planned as future serial, but incorporated a set of the innovations tested by demostratorny high-speed hybrid Eurocopter X3 helicopter. Despite more or less conservative general scheme, the helicopter it is positioned as the revolutionary and changing market.

Similar statements are based on a number of serious innovations among which the first by helicopter is an electroremote control system, adaptive blades of the bearing screw, the latest control system, and also noisiness of a cabin at the level of the main planes. Introduction of the helicopter in two stages is planned: creation of the helicopter with, mainly, present onboard systems by 2017 and introduction of revolutionary systems in it to 2020.

Development of the X4 program cost €1 billion, even taking into account reduction of the budget and refusal of a number of breakthrough technologies which counted too risky and expensive. In 2015 X4 received the official name H160 and is positioned as future replacement of the Dauphin family, and also direct competitor to the Agusta Westland AW139, Sikorsky S-76 and Bell 412 helicopters. And, according to statements of Airbus, new H160 can drive air to a sudnoma these models out of the market.

Influence of plane business of Airbus seriously affected its helicopter part. H160 will be provided with the newest system of service of operators developed for the Airbus A350XWB airliner. In 2015 the first prototype made test flight at the main plant Airbus Helicopters in Marinyan, France. It was lifted almost at once on height in 4,6 kilometers and dispersed up to 324 km/h. Helicopters will be made at the plant Mariyanyan since 2017 from the beginning of deliveries at the end of 2018 — the beginning of 2019. It is supposed that 50 cars will be annually issued.

The novelty of the Airbus Helicopters company – the H160 helicopter of average loading capacity with two turbine engines – represents something bigger, than replenishment of a line of production. It serves as some kind of catalyst thanks to which the European producer seeks to change standards of production and technical support of helicopters. In 2015 Airbus announced model as ultramodern replacement of the two-engine AS365 and H155 helicopters.

For several years the Airbus Helicopters company (earlier – Eurocopter) had reputation of the producer of excellent products which only not too successful technical support sometimes brought. The situation did not change until the CEO’s post in 2014 was not held by Guillaume Fori.

Mr. Fori worked the most part of the career in Eurocopter, being engaged in flight tests and design developments. It returned to aircraft, having left a post of the vice-president for researches and developments of the French carmaker Peugeot which borrowed from 2009 to 2013. The world of automotive industry changed its vision to the organization of support of clients, and Fori immediately started introduction of changes in Airbus that sharply increased volumes of deliveries of spare parts, having reduced terms of their delivery and having in certain cases corrected the prices towards decrease. Guillaume Fori also submitted the comprehensive program of guarantee maintenance under the name HCare.

Changes paid off. Airbus Helicopters from outsiders rose to the second place among producers of rotary-wing aircraft according to the annual review of technical support of Aviation International News, at the same time the company does not lose positions since 2015.

Introduction of changes began with a production phase when the plan of implementation of final assembly of H160 in only 18 weeks was developed – approximately twice quicker, than it is required on AS365 today. The line of final assembly in Marinyan in the south of France will unite five main points of assembly of knots which will be made and tested before arrive to the line that guarantees stable time of assembly for lines. Technological process will be automated, having united two production lines where everyone has several workstations for assembly of various configurations of H160. Airbus intends to increase power to 50 helicopters a year.

Two prototypes of Airbus H160 pass flight tests, and is planned to include the third in the program of this year later. Certification is planned for 2019. The model is equipped with completely composite design with dynamic lines and the futuristic design different from predecessors. It has a flat cabin, huge windows and the big luggage compartment with a loading capacity of 661 pound. The passenger cabin can be configured for accommodation of four or eight passengers with all “gadgets” which are present at the newest models of large business jets, or just to place 12 people.

The Airbus H160 helicopter is the embodiment of a set of new technologies, including the blades of the bearing Blue Edge screw and the horizontal stabilizer of the biplane scheme reducing noise level and improving the smoothness of flight, new Safran Arrano engines saving fuel for 10-15% and system of avionics Helionix with four big touch screens which architecture is already used on others of the two-engine Airbus Helicopters helicopters, including H135, H145 and H175. For optimization of expenses of Airbus decided to refuse an expensive electroremote control system of flight and not to include protection against frosting of blades of the bearing screw in a basic complete set. Nevertheless, there are many other pleasant technological novelties entering standard delivery.

Blue Edge blades have tips with the bend similar to a hockey stick. At rotation of blades on the ends the vortex stream is created. The bend of tips reduces a turbulence, reducing an acoustic signature of the helicopter by the whole 5 dB.

Arrano engines (1300 hp) are equipped with the two-level centrifugal compressor and the regulated directing shovels on an entrance cutting fuel consumption at all stages of flight, in particular, on the cruiser mode. They promote dispersal of H160 to the maximum cruiser speed in 160 knots and to achievement of a practical ceiling in 20000 feet, at the same time flying range makes 450 nautical miles. Airbus Helicopters also claims that Arrano will be able to brag of lower operational costs, than other engines in this class.

The avionics of Helionix is intended for decrease in working loading, in due time providing to pilots necessary information. The system connects to the eight-wheel autopilot and the indicator of restriction of the modes of flight which reflects all parameters of operation of the engine. Among other advanced functions – recommendations about a route and weather conditions, system of a round of land obstacles and system of synthetic sight.

The H160 helicopter is also equipped with the inclined tail screw a fenestron which reduces its acoustic signature even more. The inclined fenestron and the horizontal stabilizer of a design a biplane on a tail part improve take-off characteristics. Chassis and brakes with the electric drive instead of traditional hydraulic systems reduce the mass of the helicopter and increase its reliability. Time will tell. The price of such helicopter with representative salon will make about $19 million. However already now it is obvious that the technologies involved in H160 impress. And judging only by appearance, one may say, that it is the helicopter unique in own way.

Airbus H160 design

Airbus Helicopters H160 — the average multi-purpose helicopter of the classical single-screw scheme with the steering screw — a fenestron, two turboshaft engines and the cleaning-up, wheel chassis.

In the Airbus H160 model applied in air the vessel available technologies to creation of the easiest and effective design. The refusal of a hydraulic actuator of the chassis and brakes with replacement by electric drives was one of ways of decrease in weight — the similar decision is applied for the first time in helicopter engineering. It is also possible to note full-scale use of composite materials everywhere where it is possible. Actually, H139 has dimensions of the AW139 helicopter being almost one ton easier and with fuel consumption cut for 15-20% and operating expenses. Besides, by helicopter the complex of electroremote control which was earlier applied only on military and large commercial planes is for the first time applied.

H160 will become the first owner of the five-bladed bearing Blue Edge screw. Blades of this screw have twice broken zakontsovka providing substantial increase of aerodynamic efficiency of the screw and noise reduction. One this screw reduces noise by 4 dB and increases loading capacity on 100 kg.

Tail plumage specific is also executed according to the scheme of a biplane that allows to increase controllability of the helicopter at small speeds. The Sikorsky company in 2008 declared that the prototype of the hybrid X2 helicopter capable to reach the maximum speed in 462 km/h is made. “It will change rules of the game in the industry”, – the president of Sikorsky Aircraft Jeffrey Pino characterized the car. The Eurocopter company accepted a call, and in two years flight tests of X3 began.

The hybrid concept was created with use of a glider of serial AS365 Dauphin, but differed in two pulling screws on wings of small scope. The tail “fenestron” screw was replaced with a standard flat tail with the double vertical stabilizer and a wheel. The first weeds is carried out on September 6, 2010. On May 12 the 2011th X3 reached the speed of 430 km/h, and on June 7, 2013 the hybrid helicopter accelerated to 472 km/h and by that broke a world record of speed of horizontal flight for helicopters.

X3 was developed for the purpose of practical implementation of the concept of the high-speed hybrid helicopter with big flying range. Eurocopter intended to create on its base new family of hybrid cars weighing from 5 to 14 t which could be used in search and rescue operations, for service of offshore oil and gas fields, as corporate transport, and also in the military purposes. The project assumed approbation of innovative technologies which could be realized in the commercial program of the average two-engined high-speed civil helicopter. With an ulterior motive its glider was borrowed from Dauphin. X4 in which development engineers of Eurocopter were engaged practically right after the first flight of X3 had to succeed cars of this family (AS365/EC155). As it is promised, X4 – only first signs. Super Puma/EC225 will succeed X6 over time, and in 2018-2019 there will be X9 which will replace EC135 and 145.

Representing new model on Heli-Expo 2011, the president and the CEO of Eurocopter Lutz Bertling told: “Eurocopter tries to receive significant increase in payload and productivity, developing the vehicle which has the increased opportunities, is more environmentally friendly and provides much higher level of the help to pilots along with increase in safety of flights”. He also added that the configuration with Turbomeca engines considerably transforms a traditional configuration of the helicopter: “If to sit down in X4, one thing will become obvious at once. The cabin in habitual understanding will not be there”. According to L. Bertlinga, X4 will be put into operation in two stages. The first version will be submitted in 2017, and the final version of the helicopter of new generation will appear in 2020.

“We believe that we make a revolution among helicopters. With X4 we intend to reduce noise level by 70% and to cut fuel consumption for 30%”, – L. Bertling in Aviation Week interview told. This helicopter in the category had to compete with AgustaWestland AW169, and also to become an alternative of Sikorsky S-76D and Bell 412.

On the demonstrator of X4 there had to be elements of Blue Pulse and Blue Edge technologies mentioning a design of blades of the main rotor. The Blue Edge technology uses blades which have the zakontsovka bent in the form of a hockey stick, and allows to reduce noise level and to raise characteristics of a rotor. Tests were carried out by Airbus Helicopters EC155 helicopter. The active Blade Pulse technology uses mobile guards on blades. It automatically traces coaxiality of blades on air a sudnomy extent of flight and considerably reduces the level of vibrations in a cabin.

The project assumed introduction of a row of the systems facilitating management during flights in close proximity lands, flight of obstacles, performance of calling on oil platforms including in the conditions of poor visibility. Among them 2-dimensional digital navigation displays, automatic change of flight plan in case of dangers, 4-channel SAU and an electroremote control system (EDSU) were called. The main flight information had to be projected on a windshield.

However, still then developers recognized that technologies will be completely realized by the time of input of the helicopter in commercial operation in the 2017th. On X4 of the first generation it was supposed to use already tested technologies, and by helicopters of the second generation those which at that time passed a definition phase. According to analysts, such approach will allow Eurocopter to bring to the market new model when competitors only consider the possibility of use of similar technologies.

The start was given to the program when the government of France provided to the company and its partners (Safran and Thales) of the loan of $350 million. Then it became known that Sagem which is a part of Safran group of companies is engaged in development of EDSU for X4. It significantly would simplify process of piloting and would increase service intervals.

During the Heli-Expo 2013 exhibition GTD Turbomeca TM800 which received the name Arrano (in language of Basques “eagle” means) and intended for X4 was presented. The engine is developed for replacement of GTD Arriel 2 and TM333 in a class of helicopter engines with draft of 1100 h.p. and has no analogs in branch. A part of elements of the turbine is carried out by means of the 3D printer. As well as relating besides to the class Honeywell HTS900, Arrano it is equipped with the two-level centrifugal compressor. The increased extent of compression allows to achieve 20% decrease in consumption of fuel and, as a result, increase in range and payload. Besides, the engine exerts smaller impact on the environment, and cost of its operation is reduced at the expense of the concept of optimization of service of Turbomeca assuming carrying out a maximum of works in places of basing of helicopters.

In 2013 also it became known that Mecaer Aviation Group (MAG) will be engaged in development and the subsequent production of the chassis and shock-absorbers.

With L. Bertlinga’s leaving the concept of the program changed a little. On the salon which passed in 2014 in Farnborough the president of Airbus Helicopters Guillaume Fori declared that X4 will be equipped with the onboard Helionix complex of development Airbus which is established on EC145 T2 and EC175. The decision is submitted very pragmatic, however, not so innovative, predictably from new development. For Airbus it was crucial that X4 was as fast as possible put into operation. The producer was required to declare lack of monopoly of AgustaWestland AW139 in a class.

“X4 enters the market on average a segment in which the level of expectations of customers is very high, – G. Fori commented. – Operators want to see reliability, possibilities of the car when performing tasks, short terms of deliveries and low cost of operation. In this segment and it is so very close, it is drawn in also by competitors from super-middle class, and clients seek to cut down operational costs. Evolution will be. But the product which will come to operation will meet expectations of the market from the very first day”.

  1. Fori recognized that he treats carefully release on the market of new models of helicopters. EC175 left with a delay almost in two years. Deliveries postponed until completion of tests, completion of avionics and full receiving confirmations of reliability of the helicopter. “We want that the X4 model took one step further in respect of industrialization and a maturity of a design therefore from the first day we choose the correct technologies and the necessary level of flight characteristics and we do not hurry to make something revolutionary”, – he noted.

The helicopter possessing the forms impressing aerodynamic was presented in the first day of work of Heli-Expo 2015. Tselnokompozitny average two-engine H160 for which development $1,12 billion were spent received blades of the bearing screw with Blue Edge technology, the inclined tail fenestron screw, the stabilizer of biplane type, the electric Zodiac Aerospace chassis and avionics of Helionix.

Broad use of new materials and technologies allowed to achieve essential decrease in mass of a design. It is enough to tell that during creation of H160 in this Airbus area took out 68 patents. A glider from carbon fiber, same as at the military of NH90, it is manufactured at the plant of the company in Donauvort (Germany), and a tail beam and fairing of a fenestron – in France, at the Daher-Socata enterprise. For reasons of economy of weight it was necessary to refuse anti-icing system as the standard equipment though conducting under it is laid.

The bearing screw with five composite Blue Edge blades allows to reduce noisiness by 3-4 dB in comparison with EC155. This technology is developed since 2007, but is for the first time realized on Airbus products. Besides, such blades improve helicopter loading capacity on 100 kg in comparison with usual composite. Instead of the plug of the bearing Starflex screw the system with a spherical fairing of Spheriflex executed from composites with addition of thermoplastic pitch is used.

The tail fenestron inclined by 12 degrees for the first time used on Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche provides the vertical component of draft increasing payload by 40 kg. A combination of a five-bladed main rotor and a tail fenestron along with separation of a reducer from structure of a glider saved from need of use of system of suppression of vibration.

The stabilizer of biplane type increases longitudinal stability at landing approach and reduces effect of shielding of draft of the bearing screw that else almost increases payload by 40 kg. The decision, innovative for the helicopter industry, to use electric systems of cleaning landing gear extension and brakes allowed to lose weight even more.

Designers worked over a box of drives to save H160 from the possible problems with reliability of the unit happening on EC225. The design was simplified, and in the case the additional contour of the lubrication system with the oil pump is built in. Also transfer numbers towards reduction in the rate of rotation were changed that led to friction reduction. For a research of processes of lubricant in a box the transparent copy of the unit executed on the 3D printer was used. As Charles Lewis, the leader of team of developers of dynamic systems notes, the box is capable to work at this line of lubricant not less than 5 hours, and tests showed a possibility of 30-minute work without lubricant.

In a cabin of pilots four multipurpose displays with control of the cursor are installed by the sizes of 6х8 inches (in an option – with touchscreens). The main difference from EC175 is existence of the top panel on which devices of control of operation of the engine are located. As it is reported, the cabin will provide the best visibility, than at EC175.

It should be noted that the unified avionics of Helionix was highly appreciated by the American pilots during EC175 USA tour. On their responses, the system allows to reach universality of use of the helicopter and the highest level of safety due to increase in degree of protection against excess of restrictions of the admissible modes of flight. Usability in difficult conditions is highlighted that is promoted in no small measure by a possibility of control of the cursor.

If to compare Helionix to G5000H of development Garmin intended for new Bell 525, then the last has only touch management. Its displays of a little bigger diameter (12-14 inches), but functionality of Helionix is not less at all. Airbus focuses attention on the dual duplex four-channel autopilot which is adapted to flights in difficult meteoconditions and provides automatic flight with one failed engine, and the control system of an air traffic with support of TCAS II which will automatically avoid collisions. Also the convenient interface of the system having air sudnomtroyenny self-checking with the notification about own failures and malfunctions of systems of the helicopter is noted. Reliability is provided with reservation of functions of display of the moving card (DMAP), data of system of the prevention of collision with the earth (HTAWS) and electronic system of providing flight information (EFB) on each display.

H160 will be certified for management of both one, and two pilots, and the HUMS system will be included in the package of standard equipment. At the same time, Airbus will offer clients options in view of impossibility to benefit from its use at operation of small number of helicopters. “We try to democratize use of HUMS”, – Bernard Fuzharski, the senior vice-president of Airbus Helicopters for the X4/H160 program noted. “It is important as H160 can be used in air судномех possible types of operations”. These systems are transferred to H160 on “air” so clients will be able to estimate a helicopter condition, using own electronic gadgets. Information on work of systems in flight will be transferred to the earth that will allow to start technical service right after landing. Answered a question of B. Fudzharski’s EDSU that poll of potential buyers showed – its existence is not crucial especially as the Helionix autopilot copes with the majority of tasks almost also.

During the developing and operational development of the helicopter much attention was paid to test capacities. On base in Marinyan was the case of a wind tunnel worth ┬10 million where in March testing of dynamic components of the Dynamic Helicopter Zero (DHCO) model had to begin is constructed. Tests of electronic systems it is carried out in the neighboring building with use of the System Helicopter Zero (SHCO) model since January the 2014th. For a year of work experts revealed and fixed about 500 problems with the software and incompatibility. Now engineers of Airbus develop packages of the equipment for various options of use. The search and rescue option will be equipped with the nasal optoelectronic camera, the elevator on the right board and the control panel in a cabin.

Airbus Helicopters creates “the mature helicopter since the first day”. The purpose consists in achievement of level of readiness of 95% since the beginning of commissioning of H160, in comparison with 90% at EC175. The program is close to a logical conclusion. In December the skilled prototype passed tests of a row of systems alive. The first flight tests will begin, on air sudnomy visibility, in April-May. Three prototypes (PT1/2/3) and one pre-series sample (PS1) will take part in the program. Commissioning of H160 is planned for 2018, and to take orders for the Airbus Helicopters model plans to begin next year. Airbus offers H160 for use in offshore, aero medical, search and rescue operations, and also for corporate and the VIP of transportations. Creation and the military H160M version is supposed.

As Tony Osborn from Aviation Week & Space Technology notes if L. Bertling hoped that the commercial helicopter of new generation with its considerably new cabin and EDSU will be ahead of rivals at once, then without these X4 elements, H160 called now, is approximately halfway to achievement of this purpose. The model, in his opinion, is represented to more evolutionary, than revolutionary, but reflects changes in approaches of the producer to processes of development and production of modern helicopters.

H160 with the maximum take-off weight of 5,5-6 tons not only is replacement 4,5-ton AS365 and 4,9-ton EC155, but also the competitor to heavier cars. In this regard G. Fori noted: “We will resist to AW139. Clients are concerned by helicopter LTH in combination with safety, reliability, efficiency, comfort and simplicity of service. I consider that it will be difficult for it to compete with H160 on air sudnomy to these parameters. It will become the reason that clients will move in the H160 direction. H160, certainly, new generation in this segment will also be unambiguously much better, than the competitor. This is the murderer of AW139”.

H160 will be capable to transport 12 passengers on the platform located on removal to 222 km, to execute one calling and to return to point of a departure at one gas station. The maximum cruiser speed of flight is declared in 296 km/h at the standard atmosphere (ISA +20 a hail). In the search and rescue operations H160 will be able to hang out of a zone of influence of the earth on height up to 5000 feet and to have range of 833 km with a 20-minute reserve. It, of course, on air sudnomy to indicators surpasses Sikorsky S-76D and Bell 412EP, but these models and are not positioned as helicopters of new generation.

Let’s note that the maximum cruiser speed of AW139 calculated on 12-15 passengers makes 306 km/h, and the maximum flying range – 1250 km. As we see, in respect of productivity of any advantages at H160 which also did not begin to fly, it is not observed. Except for, maybe, level of noise and profitability. But the salon at AW139 is more capacious.

Today AW139 is the only helicopter in the class which completely corresponds to the last amendments to rules of Federal aviation administration and the European agency on aviation safety. AW139 provides excellent indicators on categories A (class 1) at take-off from helipads (sublime and above sea level) with the maximum take-off weight. In addition, in respect of safety, for this helicopter protection against electromagnetic impulses, electromagnetic hindrances and powerful electromagnetic fields is provided.  Reliability also does not cause complaints, and quantity of options of expeditious application as much as possible.

What is going to offer in respect of equipment of Airbus, is not clear yet. One thing is clear, Airbus H160 will be silent, comfortable and economic, so, effective. It seems that final settlement is made on decrease in prime cost when performing similar tasks. In the conditions of increase in prices for aviation fuel at the choice of model to the forefront there is a profitability. Here H160 equal will not be. New engines and the design optimized to the simplified service will serve that as pledge. Here what told Safran TM800: “Advantage of this engine consists before in considerable decrease in a specific expense in comparison with GTD which are now in operation”. By estimates of Airbus Helicopters, H160 will have fuel consumption 15-20% less, than heavier AW139, and similar to it LTH, despite less powerful engines. Yes, at AW139 the power plant is more powerful, but if to compare a Thrust-to-weight ratio, then it is approximately identical. The consumer will not notice a difference between two cars, will not pay attention to a condition of own purse yet.

Development of the Airbus H160 helicopter earlier known as X4 prototype, began in 2013. The final configuration of the helicopter was approved this year. According to plans of the European aircraft manufacturer, the first flight of the new helicopter has to take place in the current year, and start in operation of this rotary-wing aircraft is planned for 2018.

The novelty from Airbus Helicopters possesses the improved characteristics and stability thanks to a number of technical innovations. In particular, H160 is equipped with the inclined tail Fenestron screw which provides control of helicopter in the longitudinal plane and compensation of torque, and also creates additional vertical draft at the expense of a screw inclination by 12 degrees. One more technical novelty is the latest Biplane Stabilizer stabilizer which design is based on a step arrangement of the two-level connected stabilizers.

From the H160 helicopter the Airbus Helicopters company for the first time started commercial use of Blue Edge technology — the bearing screw with five blades providing noise reduction for 50% in comparison with predecessors and increase in loading capacity of the helicopter on 100 kg.

The H160 helicopter is equipped with a new set of digital onboard avionics of Helionix developed and integrated directly Airbus Helicopters. As the producer assures, the avionics of Helionix promotes decrease in working load of the pilot that raises indicators of safety of flights.

Among other technological innovations it is possible to note use of two turboshaft Turbomeca engines with a power of 1100 hp which differ in the lowered fuel consumption optimized by the maintenance process allowing to lower operational expenses. Besides, the H160 helicopters received the electric drive of the chassis that allowed to reduce own mass of the car and to increase its loading capacity. The H160 helicopter is the first civil rotary-wing AIRCRAFT made of composite materials that allowed to reduce its weight to increase case durability, to increase case resilience to corrosion and fatigue cracks, and also to reduce time for carrying out THAT.

Thanks to high rates of loading capacity, flying range and efficiency this helicopter can be used in the most different spheres, including the oil and gas sector, commercial transportations of passengers, use in the medical purposes, and also in coast guard service, in business and VIP-aircraft.
