History Airbus H215/Eurocopter AS332

In 1974 Aerospatiale made the decision to begin development of the new average transport helicopter which base had to be a successful SA330 Puma helicopter. Officially the project was announced at the Parisian air show in 1975. The new Turbomeca Makila engine, and also new four-bladed screw which is completely executed from composites had to become the main advantage of the new helicopter. Besides, the helicopter had to become much more reliable and safer even at the crash.

The tail beam and nasal part had to undergo modification (improvement of aerodynamics of the helicopter was the main task). Initially, it was planned to create two versions. The first, with the basic fuselage similar on dimensions with the Puma helicopter. The second, with the extended fuselage which had to have more capacious cabin for passengers and freights. As draft of engines at both versions were identical, the second helicopter was considered as more load-lifting, but flight characteristics of the first were higher (at the expense of smaller weight).

The sample under the SA331 index was created in 1977 on the basis of the case of the ordinary Puma helicopter with installation on it the new power plant. This helicopter was used for working off of technologies and it is not considered a prototype of the first helicopter (therefore it was called by SA331, but not SA332). The full-fledged prototype was built in 1978 and, the same year, flew up.

Tests were very successful. In comparison with the predecessor, Super Puma had big range and cruiser speed, and engines 17% more economic. Besides, the helicopter was more silent and much stabler in flight.

Success of sales of the new helicopter accelerated work on its modifications. Emergency and anti-submarine helicopters were created. Military transport received own naimenoveniye of AS532 Cougar. In 2012 Eurocopter started creation of cheaper version of the car for more effective competition to Russian Mi-17. The model received the name AS332 C1e. In 2015 Eurocopter underwent the procedure of rebranding and received the name Airbus Helicopters — all models produced by it were also renamed. From this point AS332 Super Puma began to be called Airbus H215 Super Puma. Final assembly of H215 is carried out at the plant in the city of Brasov, Romania.

Design of Airbus H215/Eurocopter AS332

Airbus H215/Eurocopter AS332 — the average multi-purpose transport helicopter of the classical single-screw scheme with the steering screw, two turboshaft engines and the three-basic chassis.

The fuselage is all-metal, type a semi-monocoque, safely damaged design. In a cabin about 24 passengers in usual option and 8-15 passengers in option with the improved comfort accommodate. The tail beam has the pro-thinned-out section and passes into the pro-thinned-out trailer beam in the form of Kiel on which the stabilizer and the steering screw are installed.

The chassis which is cleaning up, three-basic, with a nasal support. The chassis is calculated on blow with a vertical speed 3m/page.

The bearing screw with hinged fastening of blades and a brake. The steering screw five-bladed, has blades from composite materials with an advanced profile.

The power plant — two turboshaft Turbomeca Makila engines. Engines are installed by a row in the top part of the fuselage in front of the bearing screw, have separate air inlets with dustproof devices and are closed by a fairing.

Airbus H215 prices / Eurocopter AS332 prices about 15 500 000 USD.

Operation of Airbus H215/Eurocopter AS332

In 1981 deliveries of helicopters to customers began. The helicopter completely replaced basic model in the range Aerospatiale and became the main average helicopter of the company. The car became even more popular than the predecessor. For 2014 more than 890 helicopters of various modifications which serve in parks of 56 countries worldwide were put.

Airbus Helicopters will offer the Russian clients an alternative of Mi-17

The European producer Airbus Helicopters begins advance in Russia of the H215 helicopter. This model from family of the heavy Super Puma helicopters which was called AS332 earlier will be issued at the new plant of the company in the Romanian city of Brasov now. The first car has to descend from the assembly line in 2017.

Now Airbus Helicopters offers two modifications of H215. The version of the helicopter with the long fuselage contains 19 people and is suitable for a wide range of tasks, including transportation of passengers. The producer offers the shortened version for performance of aviation works and transportation of goods.

H215 is equipped with two 1877 hp turboshaft Turbomeca Makila 1A1 engines on the extraordinary mode. The maximum take-off mass of both versions makes 8600 kg, they can transport up to 4500 kg on an external suspension bracket. From the latest version of the Super Puma family — H225 the H215 helicopters borrowed the 4-axis autopilot integrated with modern digital avionics.

H215 will be offered domestic operators as replacement of the growing old park of helicopters of the Mi-8/17 family. According to Emerick Lomm, the head of the Russian representation of the European helicopter manufacturer — the Airbus Helicopter Vostok company, sales of H215 in Russia will begin next year when the anti-freezing system for it is certified.

“We do not want to call it the budgetary helicopter because in it the latest technologies are used. But the general expenses [on its operation] very low — Mr. Lomm told. — If to compare the cost of acquisition of Mi-171 and H215 and cost of their operation in eight years, then our model will have a big advantage”.

Romania will adjust assembly of the Airbus H215 Super Puma helicopters

The Airbus Helicopters company started construction in Romania of the plant on assembly of the medium-weight AS332 C1e/L1e Super Puma helicopters which will be marked from now on as H215. Production will settle down to Brasov.

In a month at the plant which area will make 10 thousand sq.m will assemble up to 15 helicopters a year. The first car has to descend from the assembly line in 2017.

It is supposed that at the plant the full production cycle will be realized. At the same time the basic equipment of helicopters will consider a wide range of requirements of clients so by transfer the minimum retrofitting will be required. In Airbus Helicopters expect that it will allow to reduce costs and to accelerate assembly.

AS332 C1e and AS332 L1e — the newest authorized representatives of the AS332 Super Puma family created in the late seventies. They differ from the of AS332 C1/L1 started in the mid-eighties in more perfect in avionics and a control system.

According to Aviation Week, AS332 L1e was certified in 2012. The shortened AS332 C1e which the producer positions as the competitor of Mi-8/17 received the certificate in 2013.

Cars are equipped with two 1877 hp turboshaft Turbomeca Makila 1A1 engines on the extraordinary mode. The maximum take-off mass of both versions makes 9350 kg, loading capacity — from 4024 kg (L1e) to 4195 kg (C1e). Capacity of a passenger cabin — 19 people at L1e and 15 people at C1e. The maximum cruiser speed — 262 km/h, flying range — 866 km at L1e and 642 km at C1e.
