Eurocopter AS365 Dauphin (after rebranding of Airbus Helicopters AS365 Dauphin) — the average multi-purpose two-engine helicopter created by Aerospatiale in the middle 1970 and which is issued Airbus Helicopters concern. History Eurocopter AS365

In 1972 the French firm Aerospatiale created the SA360 Dauphin helicopter. It incorporated a set of breakthrough technologies, had the very convenient fuselage and high-quality management. However, equipped with only one turbo engine, it was was very limited in flight characteristics. Almost at once in firm understood that the two-engine option has much more it is perspective in the market, than the basic version and were engaged in its modification.

In 1975 two-engine Dauphin made the first flight. It broke several records at once and quickly replaced the predecessor (SA 360 was released in the number of only 36 pieces).

The first production version under the SA365C index was certified in 1978. In 1982 it was replaced by SA 365N equipped with more powerful engines, composite elements updated onboard systems and the cleaning-up chassis. In 1990, after creation of Eurocopter concern, the model was renamed into Eurocopter AS365 Dauphin. The helicopter was extremely successful. It still is issued and is actively operated in dozens of the countries.

Eurocopter AS365 design

Airbus AS365 / Eurocopter AS365 Dauphin — the average multi-purpose helicopter of the classical single-screw scheme with the steering screw — fenestron, two turbo engines and the cleaning-up, wheel chassis.

The helicopter is calculated on distant flights in the wide range of weather conditions, temperatures and heights.

The power plant — two turbo Turbomeca Arriel engines equipped with a complex of management FADEC. The bearing screw composite with the effective Starflex plug. The tail screw — Fenestron. The combination of the effective screw and a fenestron in combination with noise-attenuating elements does Airbus AS365 / Eurocopter AS365 by the most silent helicopter in a class.

The fuselage is divided into a passenger cabin, a luggage compartment and niches for the cleaning-up chassis. For an entrance to the helicopter four doors of the classical scheme are used. Back doors can be optionally replaced by movable.

Civil:

  • SA365C — the basic option which was initially called by Dauphin 2 and created in 1973. It was equipped with Arriel 1 engines with a power of 630 h.p. and had take-off weight to 3,4 tons. Production came to the end in 1981.
  • SA365C1 — the modification equipped with Arriel 1A1 engines (it is certified in 1979)
  • SA365C2 — was equipped with Arriel 1A2 engines (it is certified in 1980)
  • SA365C3 — was equipped with Arriel 1C engines (it is certified in 1982)
  • SA365N — considerably the improved modification created in 1979. It was equipped with the 660 h.p. Arriel 1C engines, to the cleaning-up wheel chassis improved by tail plumage, the updated transmission and other systems. Take-off weight increased up to 4 tons. Deliveries began in 1982.
  • SA365N1 — model in which the set of the technologies created for the HH-65 Dolphin model was introduced. It is equipped with the 705 h.p. Arriel 1C1 engines, a 11-bladed fenestron. Take-off weight reached 4,1 tons.
  • AS365N2 — is equipped with the 737 h.p. Arriel 1C2 engines, has the improved transmission and the take-off weight which increased up to 4,25 tons. Tail and фенестрон completely composite. The salon is also modernized. In 1990 it began to be manufactured in the People’s Republic of China according to the license, and then it is modified in the Z-9 and Z-19 helicopters. In a passenger cabin can comfortably take place from six to eight people. Noise level does not exceed 3,1 dB. The helicopter is equipped with avionics for flights by rules of instrument flight (IFR), the autopilot, the on-board computer with the integrated dashboard, a so-called glass cabin. The new model is equipped with powerful Turbomeca Arriel 2C engines which lift the car on height of 3110 m of AS365 N3 has the maximum take-off weight of 4300 kg at the maximum commercial loading of 1911 kg.
  • AS365N4 — is issued under the EC155 index.
  • AS365X — better known, as DGV 200 or Dauphin Grand Vitesse. The helicopter was created as the demonstrator of technologies also flew up in 1991. The helicopter had the improved engines, the screw and фенестрон. With a take-off weight it flew to 4,5 tons at a speed up to 372 km/h.

Review of Eurocopter AS365.

Airbus AS365 / Eurocopter AS365 Dauphin II – the multi-purpose helicopter developed by the French firm Aerospatiale (now Eurocopter France) on the basis of the multi-purpose SA-360 Dauphin helicopter. AS-365 differs from the predecessor in a little changed fuselage and existence of two engines. On the basis of the helicopter shock, transport, anti-submarine helicopters are created. The first flight of a prototype was made on January 24, 1975.

Eurocopter AS365  fuselage.

The fuselage is all-metal, type a semi-monocoque, differs in good aerodynamic forms. In a trailer part of a beam arrow-shaped vertical plumage with the steering screw like “fenestron” is established. The squared stabilizer in the plan with the trailer washers rejected rather axial line to the left. Coloring of the helicopter provides reduction of radar and thermal radiation.

Eurocopter AS365 chassis

The chassis is three-basic, with a nasal support, cleaning up. A nasal support with dual self-orientating wheels and the main support clean up back. In the removed situation the main support are completely closed by shutters of hatches of a layered design from a kevlar or Nomex. All support are supplied with oil and pneumatic shock-absorbers. In fighting option the navigation system Cruz “Nadir” of Mk.1 or more difficult system of autonomous navigation Cruz “Nadir” of Mk.2, system of indicators on ELT with reproduction of video signals of the TV camera in the conditions of day lighting and receiving television display is used. The navigation calculator of the Nadir system Mk.2 makes calculation of navigation parameters, data of weight and data for management of fuel consumption. The possibility of use of radar station of distant detection of Sherlock and search radar station in a nasal part of the fuselage is considered.

The additional equipment turns on automatic machines for start of false targets and means of cutting of wires.

AS 365 quick review.

Designers “Aerospatiale” quickly came to the conclusion that further progress is possible only if the dvuhdvigatel′noj powerplant. SA-365C dvuhdvigatel′nogo prototype Dauphin 2 (F-WVKE) accomplished the first flight January 24, 1975 onwards (there were two engine Arriel-1A with a capacity of 650 l. e.). And two days later in the air for the first time climbed SA-366, had already two turboshaft engine Lycoming LTS-101 with a capacity of 680 l (helicopter intended for the American market). The first civilian version received the designation SA-365C, operation began in 1978 year. On SA-365C-1-Arriel 1A1 engines installed capacity of 667 HP. and modified gearbox, and the SA-365C-2 put TVD Arriel-1A2 capacity of 670 HP.

February 8, 1980 year serial helicopter Dauphin 2, equipped with two GTD “-Arriel 1A1”, developing a maximum power of 675 HP each, flew on the route Paris-London-Paris. Blades with chord 0.385 m and Ca2 profile developed in conjunction with ONERA, the relative thickness of the profile varies from 12% to 7% in top end parts. The blade has two fibre spar Z-shaped section. Lining sock blades made of fiberglass; along the toe of the blade stainless steel plate is laid, Nomex is used as a placeholder. The ending of the blades, made of carbon fiber, have leading-edge sweep of 45°. Each blade is supplied with adjustable trimmer on the ground, located at the trailing edge of the blade closest to the end of the section. Brake rotor standard type.

The upgrade of this two-engined helicopter of middle class assumed improvement of a design of the plug of the bearing screw and a reducer owing to increase in draft of the Turbomeca Arriel 2N engine that allowed to increase the maximum take-off weight by 340 kg. Modernization also allowed to cut down expenses on THAT on 10%.
