— In what version Agusta Westland AW189/Leonardo AW189 on HeliRussia is presented?

— On HeliRussia we show the version for service of sea drilling platforms which came to the market recently. It conforms to the latest international safety requirements, and even surpasses them. In this option the AW189 helicopter is equipped with the standard salon calculated on transportation of 16 passengers. The helicopter is equipped with the certified system of crash landing on water at nervousness of the sea to 6 points inclusive. — Finmeccanica, the parent company AgustaWestland, and the Russian corporation “Rostec” signed the agreement on a possibility of the organization of assembly of AW189 in Russia for the benefit of the oil corporation “Rosneft” which placed the large order for helicopters of this type. What current status of this project?

— This important strategic agreement signed by the parties last December is at a performance stage within the joint working groups. Groups communicate, necessary for development of the accurate business plan and the plan of production. The program of broad cooperation including not only deliveries of the AW189 helicopters, but also creation of capacities for training of personnel and service of VS means a preparatory stage during which the parties have to lay well structured foundation for mutually beneficial cooperation.

This project will be based on the unique experience got by the AgustaWestland company in the course of creation of HeliVert joint venture for assembly of the AW139 helicopters in Moscow region Tomilino. The schedule of deliveries will depend on requirements of customers, and also on terms of creation of the infrastructure necessary for operation of helicopters.

— Whether you consider that present rates of assembly of the AW139 helicopters in Tomilino justify existence of the Russian assembly line?

— Settlement production capacity of HeliVert makes up to 20 AW139 helicopters a year. The present adverse economic situation demanded from us optimization of structure and resources of the enterprise according to market demand. Nevertheless the enterprise managed to come to new sources of profit thanks to rendering of services on TOIR, AgustaWestland conforming to the quality standards.

Today in Russia four helicopters released at the HeliVert plant already fly, assembly of four more cars approaches end, and contracts for sale of these VS are at a discussion stage. Thus, AgustaWestland is sure that rates of deliveries of the helicopters assembled at the HeliVert enterprise will increase again after improvement of the general economic situation.

AgustaWestland brought to the AW189 market

The Italian company AgustaWestland reported that its new average two-engine Agusta Westland AW189/Leonardo AW189 helicopter is ready to delivery to the first clients. This model received the certificate of the European agency on safety of air transportation (EASA) in February, 2014, in three years after it was for the first time presented at the Paris Air Show 2011 air show. Debut flight of the car took place in December of the same year.

The helicopter operator Bristow Group who has to begin to receive these helicopters in a configuration for shelf works in the nearest future will become the first operator of AW189. In total by the present moment AgustaWestland has about 130 orders for the new car, including two helicopters will be delivered to Russia to the Exclases Holdings Ltd company., to the distributor of AgustaWestland in Russia and the CIS countries.

AW189 has the take-off weight of 8,3 t and is equipped with two General Electric CT7-2E1 engines. AgustaWestland positions new model first of all as the car for offshore and search and rescue operations including in the Arctic. But the producer notes that at the same time the spacious cabin of the helicopter is suitable for comfortable corporate, VIP-and passenger traffic. The standard cabin of Agusta Westland AW189/Leonardo AW189 is calculated on transportation of 16 passengers, however there are also configurations with the increased flying range on 19 and on the 12th pass. AW189 can transport up to 2,7 t. freight on an external suspension bracket on distance to 225 km (140 nautical miles), having a fuel reserve on a way back. In AW189 the unique system allowing to make flight within 50 min. “dry”  at interruptions in supply of oil in the main reducer and the modern auxiliary power plant providing cooling of a cabin irrespective of weather conditions and also correct operation of the helicopter are established  at high temperatures.

AgustaWestland already created complex system of service support and the centers of training. The company placed at the flight school in Sesto-Calende (Italy) the procedural and flight exercise machines certified by EASA for AW189.

Agusta Westland AW189/Leonardo AW189 is developed on the basis of the average two-engine military transport AW149 helicopter, however is absolutely new model. It was created as a part of new helicopter family where the AW169 and AW139 models also enter, and has similar characteristics, the similar device of a cabin and the unified requirements to maintenance that allows the companies — to operators of helicopters of family easy to master this type and to minimize operational costs.

For example, the onboard equipment AW189 from the Rockwell Collins company is unified with avionics of model of smaller dimension — AW169. The two-engine AW169 helicopter intended for transportation 8–10 pass., with a take-off weight of 4,5 t it was for the first time presented in July, 2010 at the international air show to Farnborough. AW169 has to be certified in 2014, right after it its deliveries to customers will begin. Exclases Holdings Ltd. will park two cars of this kind to Russia together with two Agusta AW189.

For the Agusta Westland AW189/Leonardo AW189 helicopter certified the simplified anti-icing system

The European agency on safety of air transportation (EASA) certified anti-icing system of limited action (Limited Ice Protection System, LIPS) for the two-engine average AW189 helicopter. As explained in the AgustaWestland company, it will allow to expand scope of the cars made by it.

The helicopters equipped with the LIPS system can be used in controlled conditions of frosting. It means that the route of the car has to pass over areas with guaranteed above-zero temperature to which the car can be lowered in case of excessive frosting.

According to in AgustaWestland, certification of LIPS opens ampler opportunities on operation of AW189 on shelf projects. In particular, in the company emphasized that the system will be ideal for weather conditions over the North Sea.

Besides, the producer assured, helicopters can be used more effectively in rescue operations now. In July, 2015 the FlightGlobal edition reported that because of delay in LIPS certification the British helicopter operator Bristow did not start operation of three AW189 executed in the saving version yet.

The LIPS system is offered as an option. Several indicators of frosting, including capable to find emergence of large drops of the overcooled water (SLD) are its part. Besides, the set includes a windshield heating system. It is claimed that thanks to the small weight of LIPS does not influence helicopter flight technical characteristics.

Besides LIPS AgustaWestland plans to equip AW189 with full-fledged anti-icing system (Full Ice Protection System, FIPS). Its certification is expected not earlier than the middle of the next year.

The Agusta Westland AW189/Leonardo AW189 helicopter with the maximum take-off weight of 8,3-8,6 t, capable to take aboard up to 19 passengers.

The Agusta Westland AW189/Leonardo AW189 helicopter received the certificate of EASA

The Italian company AgustaWestland reported that the new average two-engine AW189 helicopter received the certificate of type of the European agency on safety of air transportation (EASA). Delivery of the two first cars of this type to configurations for shelf works to the main customer — the Bristow Group company — will take place in the nearest future. In Russia the AW189 helicopters are waited by the Exclases Holdings Ltd company., official distributor of this brand in our country and republics of the CIS. Currently AgustaWestland received 130 orders for this eight-ton helicopter which is specially developed for offshore flights and search and rescue operations. The standard salon is counted on transportation the 16th pass. (also there is a condensed configuration on 19 and on the 12th pass. with the increased flying range). The new helicopter supplements the AW169 and AW139 family, has the similar device of a cabin and maintenance that will allow the companies operators to master this type easily.

The search and rescue version of the AW189 helicopter is certified

The Italo-English company AgustaWestland reported about completion of certification on standards of the European agency on safety of air transportation (EASA) of the search and rescue version of the AW189 helicopter. In the nearest future two helicopters will be delivered to the customer — Bristow Helicopters which will operate them for the benefit of the Air Force of Great Britain. Everything, according to the Flightglobal edition, within the contract with the Air Force of Bristow is involved by 11 AW189 and 11 Sikorsky S-92.

The maximum cruiser speed of AW189 SAR — 287 km/h, maskimalny flying range (with additional tanks) — 600 nautical miles (1111 km). The volume of salon of 11,2 CBM allows to place two stretcher, six sedentary passengers and two members of rescue team.

The newest representative of supermiddle class, AW189 received the certificate of type in February of this year. According to the statement of the producer, 130 orders for new model are collected (including options). The British company Bristow already started operation of AW189 on service of offshore fields. In Russia the AW189 helicopters are waited by the Exclases Holdings Ltd company., the official distributor of AgustaWestland in the CIS: in 2012 the company ordered two helicopters of this type.

In Great Britain for the first time in the world operation of the Agusta Westland AW189/Leonardo AW189 helicopter will begin

The British company Bristow first-ever begins operation of the superaverage AgustaWestland AW189 helicopter. It became possible after the customer received the certificate from the aviation authorities of the United Kingdom.

The first helicopter was delivered to the company at the end of May, 2014. Now in the Bristow park two AW189 which the company plans to use for performance of shelf (offshore) works in oil and gas branch.

In the nearest future these helicopters will take off from the base for Norwich in East Anglia for shelf works in the southern part of the North Sea. In total company ordered six 8-ton Agusta Westland AW189/Leonardo AW189 cars in a configuration for offshore works.

The helicopter has the take-off weight of 8,3 t and is equipped with two General Electric CT7-2E1 engines. AW189 is calculated on transportation the 16th pass. and to 2,7 t of freight on an external suspension bracket on distance to 225 km (140 nautical miles), having a fuel reserve on a way back.

Profitability of the Agusta Westland AW189/Leonardo AW189 helicopter was higher than declared

The average two-engine AW189 helicopter of production Leonardo Helicopters was more economic, than it was supposed. Such conclusion was drawn on the basis of responses of operators, flight data and information obtained from the control system behind flights. Depending on a type of works in which the helicopter will be used settlement fuel consumption will be cut for 4–7%, reports the FlightGlobal edition.

For confirmation that the AW189 helicopter really consumes less fuel, than it was declared, the producer carried out a number of tests. The supplier of CT7-2E1 power plants which equip the helicopter took part in them — the GE Aviation company. It was as a result revealed that the indicator of consumption of fuel decreases from 480 kg/h approximately to 440 kg/h in case of operation of the helicopter at shelf works.

According to Leonardo Helicopters, possibilities of the new helicopter initially underestimated. For this reason the fuel consumption in its characteristics was higher than actual. The company promised to make changes to the operation manual AW189 in the nearest future. Besides, Leonardo Helicopters will continue to improve the helicopter. In particular, at the beginning of 2018 the car will receive the updated software.
