History Mi-26

Since the beginning of the 60th the class of rotary-wing heavyweights brilliantly presented to the USSR to MI6 which and now, four decades later later began its productions, continues to serve in some countries. However by the beginning of the 70th complexity and scales of the tasks facing the helicopter park significantly increased, and the existing cars ceased to cope with them in full as military, and in the civil sector. As a result of the carried-out analysis the tendency of increase in requirement of transportation of large-size freights weighing 15-20 t at range of 500-800 km was revealed. Among them 80-90% fell to the share of new and perspective samples of arms of motorized rifle divisions, and altitude of the area where it was necessary to perform operations, could reach 1000-1500 m above sea level. During the same period after the steady growth of the sizes of rotary-wing aircrafts recession was outlined. Both in the USSR, and in the USA programs of creation of the superheavy Mi-12 and HSN-62 helicopters to an exit to a stage of mass production for the reasons rather economic and operational, than because of technological restrictions were closed up. In these conditions the Moscow Helicopter Plant (MHP) started development of the next generation of heavy helicopters.

The first flight made on December 14, 1977 under control of the test pilot G. R. Karapetyan. The serial release was adjusted in 1984. The helicopter is issued still: for 2011 316 units of various modifications are put, including about 40 cars — are exported.

Design of Mi-26

Mi-26 it is constructed according to the single-screw scheme with the eight-bladed operated step bearing with and the five-bladed helmsman screws. The power plant – two engines with a general power of 11400 h.p.

The all-metal fuselage of a semi-monocoque design has variable section. In its nasal part there is a radiotransparent fairing closing the antenna of radar station, a crew cabin, a cabin for the passengers accompanying freight and compartments for placement of the equipment. The central part of the fuselage includes a cargo cabin and the back compartment passing into a trailer beam.

In transport and landing version of the helicopter 82 paratroopers with arms can accommodate. In sanitary version of the helicopter it is possible to place up to 60 patients on a stretcher. For loading of large-size freights in a cargo cabin the electric winch with traction effort to 500 kg is located. Also the helicopter is capable to transport freights on an external suspension bracket. Loading capacity is up to 20 t of payload. Today Mi-26 is the largest transport helicopter in the world which is producing serially (its next analog – the Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter has the maximum loading capacity of 14,5 tons against 20 tons at Mi-26).

Onboard equipment

Radio-electronic and navigation equipment of the helicopter allows to carry out various tasks in difficult weather conditions at any time.

The flight complex of the helicopter consists of the four-channel autopilot, system of trajectory management, director management and clearing of fluctuations of freight on an external suspension bracket. The helicopter is equipped with a meteolocator, means of communication, and also the television equipment for visual observation of a condition of freight.

The upgraded Mi-26T2 version will receive a new onboard complex of avionics and “a glass cabin” with five multipurpose LCD displays, and also the new digital autopilot and a navigation complex with support of NAVSTAR/GLONASS. The onboard equipment Mi-26T2 will ensure functioning of the helicopter in an every spot on the globe and will allow to carry out flights on devices according to the international rules.

On September 27, 1996 the helicopter was used for creation of a big formation which was included then in the Guinness Book of Records. During this action one more record was set: Mi-26 lifted 224 parachutists on height of 6500 m.

It was used by the Air Force of the USSR in Nagorno-Karabakh, two Mi-26 were hit.

It was used for evacuation of two Chinuk SN-47 helicopters of armed forces of the USA in Afghanistan, the cost of evacuation of $650 000.

It was used for evacuation of the damaged AS-532 “Kugar” helicopter of the Air Force of the Netherlands in Afghanistan.
